Join Shimmy School for a wonderful evening of entertainment, fun and talent as we host a variety style showcase to raise funds for our chosen charity, VIDA. VIDA Sheffield is an independent women’s voluntary sector organisation. They deliver specialist domestic and sexual abuse services and training, and engage with partners to work towards an end to domestic abuse, and violence against women and girls.

We have 3 workshops throughout the day:
  • 12-1pm – Samba with Sophia
  • 1:30pm – 2:30pm – Belly Dance; Classical Choreography
  • 3-4pm – Arabic Percussion

Samba with Sophia
The workshop will take you through fast footwork, samba sequences and also help develop your musicality so that you can develop your own style and bring out the samba Rainha (queen) within you!

Sophia joined Manchester School of Samba in 2009 whilst studying Physical and Dance Theatre at Salford University. She fell in love with the fun, upbeat and lively Latin Style and Live percussion, that rumbles through your chest. This led to many opportunities and now dances at various events and parades around the North West including Creamfields and Brazilica. She has also trained with dancers from the Rio samba school Salgueiro!

Belly Dance – Classical Choreography with Eleanor
In this hour long workshop we will be learning a classical choreography to Akteb Alek (I lie to you). Enjoy learning beautiful, flowing combinations and powerful, heart-felt Egyptian technique to this timeless classic.

Eleanor has been belly dancing professionally since the age of 18 and teaching since 16. She has an insatiable passion for belly dance with a particular interest in regional dance styles.
Eleanor has performed across the globe on cruise ships and works annually for Randa Kamel at raqs of course festival in Cairo. She is the winner of the first Mercedes Nieto international scholarship and Nada El Masriya mentorship’s in 2019 and 2020. She produced and directed the sell out production of Aladdin the Belly dance with a 90 strong cast and starred in Sleeping Beauty the Belly Dance in 2012.
Eleanor now directs and manages Shimmy School and Taste of Cairo belly dance agency. Eleanor’s latest venture is exploring the healing effects of belly dance studying for a Masters of Dance and Movement Psychotherapy.

Arabic Percussion Workshop with Mark Carlyon
This session is open to those new to Arabic percussion, for drummers who would like to improve their technique as well as dancers who would like to know more about the rhythms. We will focus on some of the most popular Arabic rhythms and the techniques used to play them.

14 years ago Mark discovered Arabic percussion and was immediately hooked. During the years that followed Mark developed his own Arabic style, studying mostly with the world renowned Hossam Ramzy. Mark teaches at workshops and runs regular classes in Nottingham and Sheffield and his student group, Saiidi Beats, has developed a growing reputation, entertaining audiences with their party style drumming for dancers to shimmy along to!

If you don’t have an Arabic drum, there will be a limited number available to use, otherwise feel free to bring along any drum you have.
